Below you will find information regarding our Health curriculum, rotation, and the syllabus that all students were given on the first day of class and asked to take home and have signed.
North Carolina 9th Grade Health Standards
The 5 main Health units within our curriculum that we will cover include:
Each unit will last approximately 2 weeks and will include at least one informal assignment, one formal assignment, and opportunities to re-teach/re-test if the student has not "mastered" the material. Minimal homework will be given in class (usually only if an assignment was not finished by the individual student before the bell), but in order to receive credit on any work it must be turned in in a timely manor.

Overview
This course has been developed to teach a comprehensive, age appropriate, school health education program to students using the Healthful Living Education Standard Course of Study. You will be in this health rotation for the 2nd Quarter, during which time you will not need a PE uniform. In this time, you will study 5 categories of health including: Mental & Emotional Health, Personal & Consumer Health, Interpersonal Communication & Relationships (Reproductive Health and Safety Education program), Nutrition & Weight Management, and Substance Abuse Prevention.
Grading Policy
Informal
-Participation: Being prepared for class daily with all class materials, actively engaged in class, using your notebook and journal (notebook checks), and appropriate participation and behavior
-Assignments: Class work, worksheets, writing assignments, homework & any other assigned work
Formal
-Projects: Individual or group assigned projects/presentations
-Tests: Quizzes and written health exams
Class Materials
Students are responsible for maintaining all class work & notes throughout health. You must have a notebook for Health to keep yourself organized throughout the semester (spiral, composition, folder, binder, etc.). I would also like each student to purchase a Health or Fitness magazine to bring with them to class (Example: Men’s/Women’s Health, Men’s/Women’s Fitness, Maximum Fitness, Health, Fitness Magazine).
Participation Policy
Maximum participation is necessary, expected, and revered as a foundation for health goals and the acquisition of knowledge and skills at Independence High School. All students must participate in class on a daily basis.

-Show respect at all times
-Come to class, be seated, & prepared before the tardy bell rings
-Raise your hand to speak unless otherwise directed
-No food or drinks allowed in class
-Bathrooms used at the beginning of class (per teacher’s discretion

The Health and Physical Education Department provides a comprehensive health education program to all students. In addition, fifth grade through high school students receive a Reproductive Health and Safety Education Unit (RHASE) as part of the class.
In accordance with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education requirement, your child will participate in the Reproductive Health and Safety Education unit unless you tell us otherwise. If you do not wish for your child to participate, you must submit the “Request for Student Exemption Form” at the bottom of this page to the Principal or designee.
You are invited to review the instructional materials that will be utilized during this unit.
